Nivea Adverts

With my plans for the Nivea adverts I am getting each woman to perform the following 4 roles:

Today I went out to capture a variety of women to say particular words I have noted down and I successfully filmed 29 different ladies, I am filming my last part tomorrow with a friend off the course who is a man, it is looking very promising so far, but I wont give it all away just yet.

Plans for first artefact are progressing, I learnt from my dissertation that with Drink Driving women convictions has gradually got higher but adverts are still targeting men so I thought it would be interesting to make a factual ad where I would show the ad to a focus group of women and men separately to establish if different genders need different adverts to communicate the same message.

Our brief for this project is to make a multimedia product for the Alumni Association, I have chosen to

focus my on Cancer Awareness. I plan to create a short video stating some facts about cancer and what alumni do to help this cause.

I started thinking as I am interested in advertising i d be looking at doing promotional videos maybe for the Uni on TV or for the Uni to show on open days about courses i.e Multimedia, or looking at small businesses that cant afford promotional videos and i could collaborate with students off different pathways to promote themselves by donating their time. However I realised even though I am interested in promoting I came up with a new idea.

Easter Hols are over back to Work!

So had come pretty amazing news I won the Competition for The One Day On Earth Project and I have to send my footage to Santa Monica to be looked at by the editors and to be put on their documentary the big screen fingers crossed!

500 Words Rational for Gee Baby

Having never worked with mixing sound before, I found it quite difficult, as there are so many things to learn, there is a lot more to sound than you think. My partner was Vyte and we started by listening to all the different songs we were given called Meant To Be, Efflux, Nick, Knuckles and Pride, Witchcraft and Gee Baby. We felt the track called Gee Baby had the most potential and we knew we could help emphasis the track. We felt that was important so we went with our instincts, which we think is the most important thing. The other five sounds were quite hard to work with and did not come to our liking, we wanted something we both enjoyed and knew we could get to a higher standard. We did this but working on a piece of software called Pro Tools LE 7.3. We started by listening to the whole song to see what it lacks and what we could improve to make it to a high standard that corresponds well together. We noted down certain sections we wanted to enhance to make sure we did the most important sections first then we made the rest of the track blend and bounce well off each other. After that we picked certain parts in the track and listened to all the different instruments ranging from drums, bass, voice, keyboard and saxophone. This gave us the opportunity to enhance each instrument if we wanted to and to see what each part has to offer to the rest of the track. From here we established what needed to be done by changing the different channels by making them deeper or softer which would help collaborate with the rest of the track and fit strongly with the corresponding elements. After this we adjusted each track making sure it collaborated well with the previous track and to enable it to run smoothly. I feel as a whole we have made this song sound much more appealing to a wider range of an audience, you have to be very careful with jazz and we felt the beginning part of the song was much to intense for when you first listen to it. We wanted to start it off softly and gradually work its way up the scale so it gave people a chance to get used to the music before it being too intense, making it much more appealing to a wider range of an audience, which makes it a lot pleasanter to listen to. Working with Vyte has been very good, she is a great partner and never lets you down and I feel even though we have different opinions, we are not afraid to tell each other, the song is a well mesh of both of us, I look forward to working with her again. I feel I have learnt a lot about sound and what collaborates well and how sound really defines your work.

Top Tips for 1st Years

Don't let a lot of work put you off a pathway choice, every pathway is difficult in its own way.
Look at people's online journals if its your own year or years above.
Try and meet up with a second or third year or get to know them, or email them to talk to you and help you out when you need it.
Start looking for placements now to do over the summer of your first and second year because you won t have time in the third year.
Try do as many external projects as possible because at some point you will need to make a showreel and your university work will not be enough, you need to show your keen and passionate.
As soon as your told about a book you should be reading, go to the library that day as there are usually 2 or 3 copies and they will all be gone and people can re new books up to 9 times, unless you buy them, some are worth buying some aren't, talk to your lecturer on which ones are.

Feedback from Back to Basic Presentation

This is the feedback we got from everyone:

We needed to have some information about a budget.
We needed to explain in more detail how we got from complaint to our idea of role play.
We needed more information about the individuals we said we re interested.

Basically we should have met up more to really be a lot more on it for the presentation, I think it went well but it could have been better with a bit more prepartion!

Robin Hood Title Sequence

Well over the last few days I have been trying to get all my ideas together to show Deborah on Tuesday so that fingers crossed I know which idea to go with which will help me enable the rest of the essay and to start creating my title sequence for robin hood.

I will not be posting my ideas on here but I will be posting my inspirations and things I have looked at that have given me many ideas:

I have been looking at how Robin Hood has changed over all the different films and episodes, what makes Robin Hood, what he is about and why he is a legend.

I have about 4 ideas to talk to Deborah and hope that the best one she thinks is a winner!

In the Adventure of Robin Hood I feel this is very much a love story, you can hear a very confident radio like voice to over emphasis everything, they use really bright colours on there actors/actresses, all the titles cover the whole screen. As you can see Robin is still with his hat and arrow. As this film was made in the 1938 there would only be simple titles and black backgrounds.

In Men in Tights, I find this more of a comedy, there are some cheesy songs and black men making a lot of jokes, it seems here the colours of their costumes have become a lot darker but is still wearing the famous hat.

In the Prince Of Thieves, I find this more of a love story, it has very traditional music, simple lettering, but the title sequence has not imagination all they have done is use the bayeux tapestry as their introduction a very traditional safe idea. The colours again seem much more realistic here and the hat as disappeared but he still shows his arrows off.

In Robin Hood 2010, I feel this film is more of a battle, there is the traditional handwriting, the effect of a light from a candle, the moon and black sky and you can hear the wind and breeze, then it goes into an action sequence, people running in a forest, horses and chasing and the word Nottingham appears, you can clearly seeing people are stealing and you know its Robin Hood because he is an archer. The colours seem darker again more believable and still the hat is missing but the arrows are right there.

But whether Robin Hood is portrayed in all these different ways you know it is him because of what he believes in being fair and the law and people not being ripped off. Most films now start with a intriguing introduction but anything before the 1940's was very basic.

I decided I could go 3 ways with the title sequence

I feel the best one for me would be traditional with a twist! we shall see!

Apparently there is a new Robin Hood is progress with a modern take staring Will Smith in the making. Which will be interesting!

Also Nicolai Fuglsig is directing a futuristic action adventure re-imagining Robin Hood!

With the portfolio I am gradually building up bits to put it in for example e-on if we win, alley cafe, my pixilation piece I did over christmas with my brother, Rundance and some of my university work. Problem is I have completely forgotten how to make the beginning part of a portfolio which i mean the buttons as I have not used flash since last may! Documentary & Title Sequence Essay

So, I ve read through the brief and I understand the next 2 projects ahead of me are a group documentary and an individual title sequence, I have been researching title sequences and think I know the 3 I would like to discuss in my essay.

I also want to send of my Run-dance footage for the final time, sort out a pixilation piece I did over Christmas, sort out a film I am doing with a friend for Ali cafe and sort out a group for this E-On project which I am really keen on doing.

The Mill Work Experience

From the 4th January to the 7th I did work experience at The-Mill, I got given a really cool top I got to keep !

On my first day I was put in the TV and Film studio which was an interesting day but not exactly what I had in mind, so on my 2nd day I asked to be put in Great Marlborough street main building, which was much more interesting. I got to speak to loads of people one being a guy called Richard who worked in a Flame Studio who works on edits, he gave me so much advice, he has been working for The-Mill for 10 years and he too started as a runner. I have learnt you must start as a Runner which is not as interesting as it sounds, it is really hard work but the great thing is you get to specialise in what specific job you want to do and you can get promoted at any time so its just like working from the bottom up sucks! lol I also spoke to a guy called Daniel who worked in The Final Cut Studio, who puts all the storyboards together and had a really interesting talk, he was saying he gets to go on shoots which is what I d love to do I expressed I do not want to always been computer based and he showed me a piece of work he's done, which was for a computer game and it was amazing on how real it looks and how he made it look and he explained he sends it back to another department and then they send it back and its amazing the process it goes through to get it to the way you would see it on a television screen! I also got to sit down for an hour with 2 people from scheduling who explained that they fit in all the clients and organise everything which is where you would get promoted to after being a runner and then so on, so you have to work your way up but its amazing all the people are soo friendly and you can just knock on anyones door and see what there doing and they explain. The only bad side is when you study to be promoted you have to do it after hours of work so it means long days and travelling! While I was at the film I Had opportunities to give out some business cards I made which I think will show a real determination some people I gave them to were really impressed!

Today I went in to meet only half of the group really so not good but we got everything together and burnt it on a disc and gave it in so HAPPY! lol

THE-MILL

Today I went to meet The-Mill and had a very nice talk with a lady called Amy and I was then shown around, I was told I will be working 10-4 that my travel is basically paid for me and that I get my lunch paid score! I was quite early so I wondered around and I found BBH which is another top company I want to work with so I went in and gave my CV in, I d love to get some work experience from them also! :D I am looking forward to starting my work experience with The-Mill in 3 weeks time, I was told I would be working with the runners, getting tea, coffee, lunches which does not sound amazing but I will be meeting so many people producers, directors, CEO's it is going to be an amazing experience and I have already seen different software being used that I have not been taught so hopefully I will learn much more about this!

Could not tell if the shakiness at the beginning was on purpose.

I went over my Essay and I feel it is finished, I just mite double check it over the weekend, its taken me ages to get the words down though having too many !!

Lecture: Editing

Today in the Lecture with Jools about Editing, we had to come up with a plot and specific, shot, music I came up with a woman who was in a changing room, her friends come in with some bad news, so I thought you d have a mid shot of the woman in the changing room with her bag making noises as she pulls her clothes out, then you d see a long shot of the girls coming in the changing room, you d hear talking and a close up of the door opening and shutting, then a mid shot of the girls sitting down with her and a close up of her face when she receives the news.

The Choices made in editing revolve around the idea of flexibility of viewpoint
Editor can alter time.
Most people don't speak in a constant monotone- they speed up or slow down, rhythm of a conversation back and forth.
harmony: sound and vision simultaneously
Counterpoint: 1 sound against another image usually for dramatic and emotional effect.
Dissonance: counterpoint techniques typically used to exploit, highlight discrepancies of image sound.
Sound trailing may work, instead of dissolving it.
Elevator Pitch: we watched a clip from Moulin Rouge on pitching an idea to a customer to buy. Then we had to go off individually and do our own pitch on anything we liked and pitch it to the whole class.
My product was a documentary on work experience for 16-25 year olds that would show on itv2 and be a 30 minute documentary based in my own home, showing people tips and ideas and an insight on how to use your work experience to your full advantage.
My target audience would mainly be students and school pupils for educational, work experience purposes, to give them an idea of what is expected of them.
I Intend to sell this by giving flyers out around universities as well as schools, to set up a website and a face book group, also to make a trailer to go onto the website giving an insight to what it is about.
I would be running this with the help of my peers to give out flyers and give me opinions for my website.
My competition is other documentary makers.
My competitive advantages is being able to show techniques, to inspire people and to show real life footage of what goes on in a work experience environment.

I was really nervous when doing this but actually got some good feedback, a few people mentioned they thought my was the best including Jools, so I can't have been that bad lol!

FEEL

Over the past few days, lots of things have been done, I met up with my group for our project Feel, we have done a questionnaire, we have been filmed individual for our presentation and we sat down and did our peer assessment. So everything is basically done for our presentation on tuesday and I feel very prepared and ready for it. The only thing I need to do is an individual assessment which has not been put on the now and sort out what we will say about another groups project which I believe is Tea.

PRACTITIONER'S ESSAY

With the practitioner's essay I got my 2nd draft back from Deb and I have done all the things she has said, I also asked her what would have to do to get an A, I feel I have tried my hardest to do everything and I hope I get an A! I am going to go over my essay tomorrow and over the weekend to make sure everything is right and if theres anything more I can do to make it better, as I will be really busy over christmas working and doing work experience, so I wanted to work on it over the past 3 weeks really hard so that I can focus on other things, however I do not feel I have rushed it as I have been working nearly just as long as the Context 2 essay which was a good amount of time!

Practitioners Essay

Over the weekend I have been working on my Practitioner's essay, I sent a draft in and got some feedback and have been working on it ever since, I plan to have another draft done by tomorrow for tutor to see. I then plan to finish it by wednesday so I can concentrate on the presentation with my group the following tuesday and see if any little bits need to be done to the footage of Feel. Also so that I do not have to stress about this essay over christmas, as I will be working and be doing work experience with The-Mill for a week.

I went to the library and took out two books, one which was recommended by Jools in a lecture which I will be looking at over this week, I also took out this book below too which is about directors for my Practitioners essay, as there is quite a bit of information on commercial directors which I thought could help me.

The Mill: Work Experience

Jonathan Hearn kindly emailed me back about all my questions relating to the Mill when he did work experience and has given me loads of tips, which makes me feel a lot more confident for January and when I meet them on 13th Decemeber.

Right so over the past week lots has been done!

Feel

We filmed on Tuesday 16th and everything went quite well, we started off late but managed to get all the shots we needed right up to 4.:55pm so just enough time! We have been having problems editing and getting our sound off the tape but hopefully by end of this week we should be on our way with finishing editing if not completed!

Practitioners Essay

I have written 900 words so only 400 to go, I am planning to be able to show Deborah a draft by tuesday to then enable me continue to make it better.

Work Experience

I have managed to get some work experience with one of the top 4 companies I want to work for in January called The Mill in London and I am really excited to start, I am meeting them on 13th December so bit nervous!

I have also managed to get some work experience with a company called ZenithOptimedia which I will be doing in the summer in London also. I am extremely excited that these two companies have given me this opportunity and I will use it to my advantage!

Pizza Project

Wednesday 10/11/10: Rich Lovewell

Myself and Vyte went to go meet Jools and Rich Lovewell, who is the guy wanting use to promote a pizza company, we had a meeting and discussed many things.

Rich is wanting myself and Vyte to take some footage in the Ali Cafe of how they make there pizzas.
He is wanting something ranging from 2-3 minutes long
Sound is not needed
He would like a normal and compressed version of our footage we take
Myself and Vyte went along with Rich after the meeting to see what Ali Cafe is all about and to get an understanding and flavour about it, we found it was a very nice cafe, quite hidden, i do not think many people know of it.
Myself and Vyte plan to start this project next term as we only have 4 weeks left of this and have 2 other projects on at the moment, Rich is not too concerned about a certain deadline but we d like to think about February.
We met the manager of the Ali cafe and he seemed really nice and he explained to us that he has quite a few bands that play here, so me and Vyte were thinking next term we d try go with a camera on a night where a band is playing to make it more interesting.
I was a bit disappointed when Rich explained the footage is only going to appear on the website but its all experience!
We will need to do RECCE FORM AND RISK ASSESSMENT!

Camera Assistant Job: to ensure whether gells are being used, to know if its a day or night shot to be consistent with lighting.
Lighting Continuity: need to stay constant
Continuity of eye-lines: ensure that you make eye-lines match when shooting a scene.
Covering the action, shot sizes: maintain composition move the camera to follow the mini action
Record cutaways & inserts: focus, depth of field
Don't cross the line: Honour the don't cross the line
Always start & end with a still shot: Allow still shot easier to edit afterwards- leave the frame rather than constantly following it.
Record Atmosphere tracks: 1 minutes silence.
Wow tracks: important, add that extra bit of sound.
Record wild tracks: of action off screen- record straight after-scene.

Recording Media and Formats 9/11/10: Lecture Danny

We still record into waves today which is un-compressed, waves have been going on for a long time and are still effect to use today.

Lecture: Jools: Between Action & Cut 5/11/10

What is acting: when you portray yourself as someone your not, when you change your character's personality, for a certain role capture a recording, an entertainer, a form of visual art, ability to bring script to life, pretending something is real, recreating human behaviour.
Acting is the natural process of hearing, thinking and responding in the unnatural environment of knowing what you are going to hear, knowing what you are going to think and knowing how you are going to respond.
Three Requisites:
Relaxation- the ability to react quickly and reduce tension
Concentration: The ability to shut out all distractions
Recall: the ability to recall experience in detail.
Beats: are a moment of decisive realisation for any character.
First step characterising the beats: gives each beat and each dramatic unit a purpose.
Improvising an interior monologue: have the acts improvise their characters inner monologue.
Some actors do a scene from memory: use tags as dialogue.
Rehearsal: develop the cast and relationships, focus the thematic purpose, encourage actors to develop their character.
Rehearsal is not performance but to get ideas that will work in front of the camera.
10 point plan:
1. Ideas of what film is about.
2. What is means to you personally.
3. Each scenes, facts, images and question it raises.
4. What the scene is about, how it fits the story graph of the script.
5. Possible character objectives and imagination back-story adjustments.
6. Beats of the scene, its characterisation and action verbs ideas of how you might work on the beat.
7. The Scenes reality and environment.
8. Research you have done and research you have left to do.
9. Your plan of what you wish to accomplish.
10. A blocking diagram (which means you are psychologically prepares to throw away your story board).
Shooting Script Rehearsal: do not expect your actors to have learnt the lines, you provide the stage direction.
Characterisation Exercises:
Inner Monologue
Tag lines
Moral Positioning
Back-Story development.
If rehearsal is on your shooting day, set the crew off technically, this is where story-board, shot lists, mise-en-scene can pay off, sit with the actors, read lines, find some simple movements and objects, look for false moments and solve them.
Discuss what the characters objective is for that scene- add stuff slowly in layers and beats, be wary of giving too much back-story all at once, when finishing one beat- deal with the next one in isolation and remember action verbs and images.
Be aware of the value of bringing objects to rehearsal and be very aware of introducing it to the scene.
Rehearsals should end with questions, with things for the actors to work on.

Over the weekend of the 5/11/10 to the 7/11/10

I watched two new films and thought I write a couple of notes on here about them, the first one I watched was called Frozen which was directed by Adam Green, is it about three skiers are stranded on a chairlift and forced to make life-or-death choices that prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death.

I thought this film was extremely good, very good with suspense, bit cringe with some things that happen made feel sick, I was disappointed at the ending but they have left it open I feel for another continued piece maybe.

I also watched a film called Paintball which was directed by daniel Benmayor which is about a truck which is rumbling down a potholed track, in the back sit a group of passengers, their eyes blindfolded, they endure on a task to beat the other opposing team to all the different flags, when the game turns into a deadly life threatening situation, that people are playing with paint balls but real bullets. People on the outside of the game pay to watch people fight for their lives as this game is twisted and turned into a sick trap for these people who thought they were going to be playing paint ball.

I thought this film was fantastic, I liked how it got you to want to literally help the people stuck in there, it was a very good twist, a lot better than what I was expecting from it.

Deborah asked us to look at the lecture Production Design as we discussed the proposal in lesson time, so here are my notes on the Production Design Lecture:

Production designer: making the visible invisible: a production designer's job is to turn real spaces into cinematic spaces of the imagination.
The Art department: Production designer, Art Director, Prop makers and set construction, Technical artist, Art department assistants, Set dresser, Storyboard artist and Continuity sometimes.
Models give a 3D representation of the set, creating storyboards, shooting methodology
Methodology is a set or system of methods, principles, and rules for regulating a given discipline, as in the arts or sciences.
Dr Strangelove: Sir Ken Adam- Production design- Doctor Strangelove- War Room, this picture "creates frames on the screen that comply with the time honoured rule of thirds" as the camera glides around the room the vertical and horizontal zones frame content perfectly according to aesthetics or its principles, in a aesthetics manner.

Also the hotel set where General Turgidson and Miss Scott establish their relationship had two mirrored walls, facing each other which creates a sense of depth, also the costumes there wearing are patterned giving another visual layer and finally the low ceiling and use of practical lighting helps to give an sense of architectural form, this set allows the audience to focus on the couple.

I looked up Pans Lavyrinth on google and did not realise they recieved 3 academy awards for best cinematography, best art direction and best makeup which is amazing, this is about the fascist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, with this film Eugenio Caballerio moved swiftly, recalls del Toro, they were "popping out set designs in 1/2 days, very intricate work: puppetry, tractional prosthetics, CGI and more but executed in a context that was totally unexpected, Eugenio and Guillermo were completely attuned to what I wanted".

I fount his lecture very interesting and I am glad I went, Peter talked about how to do a proper Curriculum Vitae and covering letter.

Feel 2/11/10

We did our proposal on the 4th and it went quite well, we have decided on a location being Harvey Hadden Athletic Stadium, we are having to pay £51.70 as a group so its not too much but its a brilliant location so it worth the £7.31 each.
Treatment: A subtle and compelling love story; set in a sterotypical competitive environment. A former athletics coach is drawn back into coaching, when inspired by a talented homeless athlete. The homeless guy is given the chance of release from his unfortunate surroundings, when an opportunity arises for him to flourish in a hidden passion.
We have been given two actors called Tony Claassen and Joanna Wells
I have made a very organised schedule: where on the Tuesday 9th November we are planning to have a draft of:

The Lady Vanishes by Alfred Hitchcock

I found this film really interesting and enjoyable.

Bon is the hotel manager, an avalanche occurs causing the trains not being able to leave, so everyone tries to stay at Bon's hotel but it is rather full, three english ladies arrive to stay at the hotel however they booked ages ago so they go right to there room.
Two gentlemen called Chutlis and Calldicock arrive but there are no rooms left so Mr. Bons offers the maids room and they take it.
They say english are honest by nature
Apparently people love to sing here up in the mountains
A man called Gilbert plays really loud music and dancing above one of the english ladies room called Iris and she bribes the manger Mr. Bons with money, he goes and kicks the man out. Later on Gilbert comes into Iris's room and starts to unpack saying he is staying there so she rings Mr.Bon and gets his room back.
The man who has been singing all afternoon outside get strangled by an unknown person.
Iris and the english ladies the next morning take her to the train, however an old lady called Miss. Froy asked if they had seen her bag she went over to the bench and Iris realised her glasses were on the floor she goes over to give them to her and a flower pot falls on her head but that flower pot was meant for Miss. Froy.
Iris still gets on the train Miss. Froy assures her two friends she will look after her, she then collapses on the train though.
Miss. Froy looks after her and takes her to have some tea however Miss. Froy only likes her tea called Mariman's so she brings some of that with her.
They then go back to her seats and Iris falls asleep when she wakes she can't seem to find Miss. Froy and no one else seems to have remember an old lady sitting with Iris.
Iris begins to search the train and bumps into Gilbert the man who was playing loud music and dancing, he insists on helping her.
Iris remember having tea and the two gentlemen Chutlis and Calldicock passing the sugar so she goes to find them to see if they remember Miss. Froy and to find another man who was in their cabin in the train she went to see hi first. The man says there was never an old lady with you, he mentions as you knocked your head maybe its made you to believe you were with a Miss. Froy.
Train stops at its first destination as injured passenger comes on with a noun, she looks for Miss. Froy but sees no one.
Iris continues to look with Gilbert and goes to see a couple who might have seen Miss. Froy but the man says no but there lying so that they do not have to be witnesses, however the man's lover later tells Iris she did she her.
This couple want to divorce their partners but the man says his wife never will.
Margaret the man's lover tells Iris s a lady called Madame Cumar helped her with her bang to the head not Miss. Froy.
Iris sits down all panicked and starts to see Miss. Froy's face everywhere, she admits the people are right maybe I am imagining her.
Iris mentions she is getting married on Thursday.
Iris goes to sit in the diner cart with Gilbert and notice where Miss Froy wrote her name earlier when they had tea on the window as she could not hear what she was saying, however when she tries to show the man it disappears.
A Dr. Heart mentions to Iris you can stay in a room at my ward for a night to get better.
Gilbert sees a man throw rubbish out the train and sees a piece of paper that has tea: Mariman's written on it then he believes Iris about a Miss. Froy being on the train.
Gilbert mentions we are on a cosmopolitan train for all different nations, he believes her, they go to the cargo part of the train and see a box moving and assume its her but its a cow, they keep looking and find magician things who below to the Italian man who Iris was sitting in the same cabin with. The man asks Iris where was Miss. Froy going she says that she was going home and she was a governor. The man finds a visiting car that says the great act of the vanishing lady.
The Italian man finds them and has a fights with Gilbert, they find Miss. Froy's glasses, they trap him in a coffin but it turns out it was a trick coffin like the disappearing cabinet they found.
Iris notices the noun that came on board with the injured passenger isn't a noun as she is wearing high heels.
Gilbert says to Iris maybe when Miss. Froy came on the train they put her in the luggage area, then Madame Cumar became Miss. Froy and Miss Froy became the injured passenger- as they never saw Miss Cumar get on the train, but they say why would someone go to all this trouble for a governor maybe its political?
Dr. Heart finds them looking at the injured passenger and say the noun is deaf and dumb and he ll meet them in the diner cart, however when they leave he says to the noun whats happened she said they must have been tipped off, they believe theres been a subsituition.
They reach Marsekin Soan, he tells them that it is Miss. Froy and they can have a look soon, but first have a drink.
They have a drink then Dr. Heart mentions he has spiked the drink with Hydrosen, he mentions the operation for Miss. Froy will be performed by himself, he is involved with the comspirisie, iris faints and Gilbert pretends to faint too, they wake up when Dr. Heart has left and realise they need to save Miss. Froy who is going to get murdered. However when they go back to the noun she is actually a good person as she says I am not deaf and dumb and your drinks werent spicked the Docter asked me to do it but I didnt, she wants to help, they start to unbanage her face and it is Miss. Froy.
Then Madame Cumar walks in they take her hostage and put her down as the patient instead.
The train stops for the second time, they bring the injured passenger out and put them into am ambulance however Dr. Heart realises something is wrong and then finds Madame Cumar, the noun is coming off the train and he tells her to get back on.
The train starts again and they are nearly over the boarder, they hear a woman scream they think its the noun as she got in trouble and knows too much.
Someone separates their carriage from the rest of the train, their train stops and they see a bunch of cars waiting for them with men with guns, a man comes in to convince them to leave but the man knocks him out.
From outside they start to shoot so some of the passengers start to shoot back, one of the two gentlemen who love cricket and who were getting this train to england to see England vs Australia and ignored Iris too long for what was going on got shot in the hand but is alright.
Gilbert who has been helping Iris shoots some of the bad guys, Miss. Froy pulls Iris and Gilbert to the side and tells the if something happens to her they have to remember this tune its a vital message for a Mr. Calendar about between two european countries.
Miss. Froy makes a run for it so they now have two chances of getting that message there.
Margaret lover refuses to fight and says he is going outside to surrender, he refused to use his gun but someone took it off him, he goes outside and gets killed for not listening.
Gilbert goes to get the train started again and does, the man who Gilbert knocks out comes back to his senses and takes the rest of the passengers hostage, while Gilbert is getting the train going, the noun who is with him has to jump off the train to change the direction and get shot in the leg.
Train finally arrives to England on Platform 7, Iris sees Charles her fiance and hides and jumps into a taxi with Gilbert and they kiss. Gilbert later forgets the tune and they hear someone playing it they follow the sound and there is Miss. Froy playing it on a piano.

Chapter One: Intuition, Ideas, And Imagination

Intuition: is when you see or feel something that is not apparent to others, that may even be contradicted by ordinary reason and evidence.
When directors say, "they are in the moment" this means that their emotional territory is primarily subconscious.
Directors need to communicate with actors on a level that goes below the social mask on a feeling level.
First the director needs to read the actors impulses and feelings, then they need to respond to what they see, they need to know when they need to talk seriously to an actor and when to tell a joke, they need to know when to engage and push an actor and when to step back also, they also needs to know tools to use when- when to use an image, when to use a verb, when to tell a story or when to ask a question.
Directors need to know how to prepare so that their ideas achieve a level of intuitive truth, this means deep script analysis, also to develop and practice your craft by this I mean to include shot composition and understanding of technology, however it should also include the abilities to see below the surface of the script to shape and block a scene so the "master shot" can be usable, and to engage the actors in the emotional events of the script. To be able to do this well the director must activate his full intelligence, which included his unconscious knowledge and associations, rather than perform to rules.

The Visual Story

Chapter 3: Space

Space is a complex visual component, it not only defines the screen where all the other visual components are seen, but space itself has several subcomponents.

Part One: defines the 4 subcomponents of space: deep, flat, limited and ambiguous.

The physical nature of a screen is strictly 2-dimensional, movie, TV, computers screens are all flat surfaces that can be measured in height and width but practically speaking, no depth.
Pictures can appear three-dimensional even though they're being viewed on flat two-dimensional screen surfaces.
Deep Space: is the illusion of a three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional screen surface.
The audience believes they see depth on a two-dimensional screen because of depth cues.
Depth cue: is making the audience believe the two-dimensional picture they see has depth where it in fact doesn't, i.e depth cur are visual elements that create the illusion of depth.
The most important depth cue is perspective.
When a plane's top and bottom lines are parallel and its left and right side lines are parallel this is a frontal plane.
Perspective comes in three basics types: one-point, two-point and three-point perspective.
One-Point Perspective: when lines along the top and bottom of the plane appear to meet or converge at a single point this is called a vanishing point VP, usually this appears on the horizon but it can elsewhere. This then creates a longitudinal plane, an extremely important cue to illusory depth.
The longitudinal plane appears to have depth, an example (one-point perspective) of this is standing in the middle of a railroad track, the rails appear to meet/ converge at a VP on the horizon, however the rail never meets they always remain parallel but they appear to converge toward the VP.
Two-point Perspective: uses two VP's, more lines have been added to the longitudinal plane to make the convergence more obvious, the viewing position may have been raised or lowered now the sides of the longitudinal plane are no longer parallel.
Two VP's can also be generated using two separate longitudinal surfaces, this usually happens with buildings, the top and bottom lines of each longitudinal plane converge to separate VP's. Another example of this is a corner of a room because the VP's are hidden behind the longitudinal planes but they are still converging lines.
Three-Point Perspective: for example on a building all the lines will converge to one of three VP's. One VP will appear above the building, the other two will appear along the horizon line to the building's left and right.
Perspective, VP's and longitudinal planes can be applied to anything, for example when a camera is at eye level, an actress is like a flat frontal plane. When the camera is lowered and tilted up the actress becomes a longitudinal plane this occurs when the camera is raised and tilted down at the actress.
VP's help keep the audience's attention on actresses, this does not mean you must locate one all the time but its a good tip.
However as a VP leaves the frame, its ability to attract the audience attention decreases.
Moving from 1-2-3 point perspective is a visual progression, the more VP's the greater the illusion of depth, one VP will create the illusion of depth adding more will enhance the illusion of deep space.
You can have many more than three VP's but three is an advantage for the picture maker because it means there are only three levels of illusory depth possible when using perspective and convergence.

Chapter 1: Developing Your Film On Paper

Ideas can come to us anywhere and at anytime.
Raymond Carver once said, " You have to be a sponge, you have to constantly absorb the world you live in". If you keep your eyes and ears open, you will discover that material is all around you. Everyday life provides fertile ground for story ideas, visual ideas, and character ideas. Stay alert and connect to the world around you, then you'll be able to connect with your audience.
Another word for hero is protagonist.
The plot is the order of events of your film- the unfolding of the story and the scenes.
The events of your film result from the chemical reaction between three dramatic elements: your character and their goal and any complications or obstacles that pose some sort of conflict.
Bringing a film to a resolution means to an end.
pyrrhic victories means a victory or goal achieved at too great a cost.
iconoclastic means a breaker of images
A concept is a very brief outline of the basic dramatic elements involved in your story.
With short films the key is to work on a compact scale.
Short films usually revolve around a single, simple idea, recognisable characters, and a sharp turning point to make one moment resonate.
Short films can tell stories without direct character conflict if they replace the conflict-orented dramatic question with something else compelling- another type of mystery or question.
Short films can work well with this provided that the question posed is compelling and visual and the answer is satisfying.
Peter Hedges: is an American novelist, screenwriter and film director.

Jean-Luc Godhard: is a French-Swiss film director, screen writer and critic.
Ideas in their raw form are not a film story, once you have an idea, you need to translate it into a film concept, with specific character, conflict, action, then you will be ready to write you screenplay.
Next step is to identify ideas that can both be great movies and be accomplished within the filmmaker's real-world limitations. Always keep in mind that there is a symbiotic relationship between ideas and resource, you must work from the beginning, with what one has rather than what one wishes one had. Such resourcefulness will go a long way to ensuring that you will in fact make movies.
Every project big or small is an opportunity to show that you can master the craft of filmmaking, the art of cinematic storytelling, and your specific circumstances to deliver an effective film.
Having a bigger budget does not mean a film will be better, the less money the better as you must be more creative.
As long as you can be smart, sharp, elegant and work intelligently with minimal resources.
There is an actual law of diminishing returns when it comes to overextending your crew.
The more people you have in front of the camera, the more time and money you can generally expect to spend.
At the beginning the first thing is to establish the logistical, financial, and labor parameters of your production.
Working fast can also being called "frantic filmmaking".
You can turn limitations into an opportunity to create a flamboyant style that perfectly matches the story and mood of a film.

Today I managed to watch the 2 films I said I would and here are my notes on them:

Topaz by Alfred Hitchcock

I thought this film was very strange, it is quite hard to get into but once you understand it, it was a good film, however I found the french accents very hard to understand this is why it took me a while to get into the film.

"In a crowd is a high russian official who disagrees with his governments display of force and what it threatens, very soon his conscious will force him to attempt an escape while apparently on a vacation with his family".
Copennagen- Denmark: 1962
family of three being followed, Mr. and Mrs. Cruzanof and their daughter tamara, tamara dropped a statue and rung a man- dan perm an ente, they all got away in a cab, however tamara fell over a person on a bicycle and cut her knees, the men tried to shot but missed.
They were taken to go on a plane to Washington by the US. airforce military airlift command to meet Mr Blake and Mr Mikidric, they pass the white house by car after they have landed, they find out they are staying in a house with Miss. Mosit.
The agents want to take pictures of the family.
Derald arrives to see Darcy and general - a message from Paris a high russian intelanificual has defected to the americans.
Where are the american hiding the defector and how? Darcy wants to know.
Derald wonders why? what will Paris do when they find out? tell Moscow? How did Paris get this information?
Tamara loves to play the piano in her spare time.
Mrs. Cruzanof has a dress fitting, its the dress she saw in a magazine that Miss. Mosit got for her.
TOPAZ: code?
Family have no choice but to change their identified they are shown models of different faces, as it will be safer for them as they knew what they were getting into.
Russia and Cuba have a written agreement.
A man named Mark came to see Derald for help.
Mark's son in law is a talented drawer and wants to see a drawing he did of a man named Louie Bullenton, he takes this drawing to a friend at a flower shop called Martinlgue Flowers Shop.
Derald's friend from the flower shop goes to a restaurant- bar- grill to go find Louie, he found Mr. Comrad and got him to believe he was wanting to interview him and take pictures of him waving to the Americans. While Louie was stealing his red brief case Mr. Comrad clocks on later and goes to Louie's room and caught them, Derald's friend jumps out of the window and he starts shooting but misses him.
Derald then has to make a trip to Cuba he does usually 4-5 a year for his job, but his wife Nicole does not want him to go or to die. However Derald has to find out what the russians are up to in Cuba/
Derald stays with a woman called Juanile in Cuba that his wife knows about but is not happy, it turns out he is having an affair, Juanile works underground, she is head of a network and works for Derald sometimes.
As soon as he meet they kiss passionately , he mentions he needs help from her organisation.
She sends two of her people to spy on the russians at the top of this hill where no one has got that close, however they get caught, the woman is badly injured, as the soldiers saw them and started shooting.
Before they are caught they manage to hid there camera in a pole on the street which later on someone takes and hides inside a chicken which is taken to a secret place to get developed.
Comrad intrudes on Deralds and Juanile's dinner to say to he wants him to leave Cuba tomorrow, Derald goes without a fuss.
The two people that worked for the Juanile are held captive with Mr. Comrad he asks who sent them and the woman mentions the Juanile. Mr. Comrad goes to see her and his soldiers find her camera and development room and kills her as she betrayed him to his mind but she didnt feel that way at all, she felt he was keeping Cuba people prisoned.
Before this had happened Derald left for his plane and the Juanile gave him a book to read on the plane, which write inside October 1962 and inside the book behind the sealed cover was the scripts of pictures that haven't been developed, she died but gave Derald the proof he needed.
A man comes to visit Derald back in America to tell him to go to Paris as his family is at risk, Nicole had already gone.
TOPAZ: is a code name for a group of french.
Obey your conscious or government a man mentions to Derald.
Derald goes to house party where Nicole is and he brings there daughter, Derald meets some people that will help him and they arrange a lunch the next day.
Derald explains at the lunch there are leaks in their government but he does not know exaclty where, he mentions the Americans have a russian detector.
Nicole goes and sees another man, as she is a free lady after Derald went to Cuba she was extremly unhappy.
Derald's son in law goes to see a man for him to interview him and draw him, the man he interviewd got killed and thrown out the window as Derald's son in law got knocked out and the men took him hostage, however he managed to escape.
Cuban Missile crisi is over, khrushchew agrees to scrap bases.

The Conversation by Gene Hackman

I thought this film was definitely a great example of mis-en-scene, I could really see a combination of blocking, camera, image design, dramatic content and sound design, really good film to watch.

Man dancing and mimicking people on the street.
Gun man attempts to shoot a woman/man.
Harry Caul, its his birthday he s 42, he rung someone to find out how they managed to put a present in his apartment he does not like people touching his things.
Harry likes to play his saxophone in his own time.
Harry hates it when people use the lords name in vein.
Hall and Harry are from San Francisco, Harry is eavesdropping on the two lovers, however after his last piece of work his subjects died he is full of self doubt, however he has been doing this for 20 years, (being a professional eaves-dropper) he does get involved and feels the wait of his responsibilities, he goes against every principle he says he has, which is his own downfall.
Harry goes to his warehouse shop where his friend reading a magazine mentions, about his convention and that Harry is one of the notable names, among those preeminent in the field expected to attend our Hall Lipsit and Harry Caul from San francisco, which is about surveillance and the law.
Harry calls a man for an appointment at 2.30 to give him the material, however the director is not there so he does not hand over the tapes.
He goes to see Amy in the middle of the night but she s asking too many questions so he leaves and she says she tired of waiting for him.
Harry bumps into the girl he's been spying on in the lift but she does not recognise him.
Harry goes to church to repent, he is afraid he is going to get hurt for the things his work does.
Harry goes to an event for convention of wiretec, he notices a man is following him the one he would not give his material too he mentions to him the director will be back on saturday at 1.00 if you would come then.
After the event Harry and his friends went to hang out and have a few drinks, Harry does not know that his friend's bugged him and show him his conversation with his Meredith and he gets very upset and kicks everyone out except Meredith. The lady tries to seduce him but he's too out of it and they fall asleep.
Harry has a nightmare about the woman he s spying on, say he knows her but she does not know him and that as a little boy he was sick he was paralysed in a part of his body and doctors thought he would not walk again.
Harry is not afraid of death but of murder.
When Harry wakes up Meredith is gone and so are the tapes!
Harry goes at 1.00 on saturday and gives the director his tapes and takes him $15,000 and he brings pictures too but takes them back and throws them away, he asks what will they do with the material but they do not tell him. He overhead them talking about a hotel and room 774, Harry goes there and gets the room 773 to see what is going on, he checks out the room, he drills into his wall to hear what is going on. He goes to his balcony and see a woman being murdered. He goes back to check the room again and the toilet is over flooding with blood.
Harry went back to see the director but the two men at the front desk wouldn't allow it.
However later on he sees the woman he s been spying on and figures out it was a man that got murdered and the woman let it happen! they suffocated him.
The man who acts on the director's behalf rings harry and tells him he knows he knows and to not get involved, so he goes back home and puts all his religious things away and starts breaking his apartment and then plays his saxophone.

This film was meant to show a lot about eaves-dropping and it certainly did for me.

Context 2 Essay

I sent off my first draft of the essay on Thursday 28th, I recieved feedback the same day and have been working on the feedback for the past 3 days! I am going to send my 2nd draft tonight and hopefully get a better result! :D

In this lecture we talked about recording studios and equipment:

• Echo: Vibration of the walls

• That Curved walls are better for sound for the ecustics to bounce off.

• Wooden Room: is for recording vocals

• Stone Room: is for recording drums

Deborah's Lecture 26/10/10

In Deborah's lecture we talked about the Reece Sheet (Reconnaissance) and about being a location manager and how many things a location manager has to do which I did not realise.

Deborah mentioned a really useful website for locations

Jim Shorthose Lecture 26/10/10

I again found this lecture not that great of use, Jim mentioned that you should find relationships when you leave university and I think thats quite obvious to be honest. He was explaining more is different and to embrace your own ignorance and that it can be useful. He mentioned you should encourage encounters and pay attention to local information ie. your own network. One thing I found fascinating was that he mentioned 15,000 films have been made since Motion pictures began featuring over 300,000 crew.

Seeing the Script 29/10/10- Lecture by Jools

In this lecture Jools talked about seeing the script:

• Thematic concern: conflict- causes concern

• Idiosyncrasies: definition, unique characteristics

• Disparity: difference- example Beautiful mind, fight club, inception

• Epoch: age for example 20th century

• Beats: are a moment of decisive realisation for any character

We were put into groups for our next coursework piece I was put with 6 other people so we have a team of 7 and we were given the script called Fell and we dicussed our roles and this is what we decided:

1. Bejamin King: Director and Location Manager

2. Charlotte Cochrane: Producer, camera assistant and photographer

3. Thomas Pierrepont: Camera, post production visual effects

4. David Casey: Sound assistant and post production music/effects, lighting

5. Laura Read: Editing, runner, health and safety representative

6. Mike Wilson: Sound recording and post production music/effects, props

7. Alex Lea-Hayes: production assistant, locations assistant and titles designer

We have also set up a group on facebook so if we ever need to get in contact as well as having all each other's numbers its a good way of contacting each other.

Jim Shorthose Lecture 29/10/10

This lecture actually made a lot more sense to me as I said to Jim I really do not understand what he is going on about, he was explaining a bit better saying your relationships to the network, that the solution is never right in-front of you, creativity- you should feel confused about. He explained the exercises he did last week explaining that 90% of the way your going wrong but you end up in the right place.

Monster by Gareth Edwards

I went and saw Monster by Gareth Edwards and I was really impressed with the film, I thought it was really good and I was really glad I went. Later on he had a masters class to where he went into detail about how he created the film and it was really interesting and I learnt some wicked things.

I am going to try finish off Topaz by Alfred Hitchcock tomorrow and post my notes on here and I hired The Conversation from the Library so I am going to try watch this also and post my notes up. I Also want to read the two books I am currently reading so I can put the next chapters notes on here and attempt to start The Film Directors Intuition by Judith Weston tomorrow as it will help a lot with my new coursework piece. I also have a book called Voice and Vision by Hurbis-Cherrier which I will try to read the first chapter and post my notes also up here.

Cinema is a great art form of our time.
the first complete version of a film is called the director's cut.
Directing means developing the skills and persuasion to make everybody give of their very best.
A lot of learning in filmmaking is negative learning, as you mature you come to understand how to fulfil your audience.

I feel from reading a part of the first chapter this book has a lot of tips and will really benefit me in many ways.

Affinity: Similarity
Contrast: Greater Visual Intensity

Storyboard: is a set of drawings that illustrate what the final film will look like.

I have been extremely busy over this last week I have been working on my Context 2 essay I plan to have a draft finished today!

I watched the film Robin Hood which Jools mentioned we should see and I thought it was really good I had heard bad things from it but I would say its a must watch to people, it takes a while to get into but once you understand I think it s a really good film.

Deborah asked me last week to come up with a few ideas for some adverts and I came up with 3 not sure if there even that great but thought i d post them on here to see if anyone likes them:

1. This advert would be for a phone company, most people have a case for their phone, I had an idea that instead of putting your phone in a case you put a little person- the customer- showing that this network will do anything for their customers and that they are trustworthy and loyal.

2. Fedex- I had an idea that Fedex would be delivering a cake for a little girl for her birthday but the cake gets ruined as do a lot of people parcels sometimes, Fedex go out and replace the cake showing that they aim to deliver and to never disappoint.

3. For an energy efficient advertisement, someone in on a train and realises that they have left there oven on, however there phone allows them to activate a voice control to the house to turn it off.

Lecture 22nd October: Jools

In this lecture Jools discussed Mis-en-scene: Which is a french word for within the scene. We watched a series of clips from films analysing:

Blocking: Actors in relation to each other
Camera: Choice of lens
Image Design: Use of colour
Dramatic Content: Rhythms
Sound Design: Diegetic

Diegetic: Sound that is already there

Non-Diegetic: Sound that is added

Jools mentioned we should download Celtx, its to help us with scripts and I have done that so hopefully it should help me.

Jools also mentioned we should watch a film called The Conversation by Francis Ford Coppola so I will be getting that out of the library to watch as its suppose to be a great example of Mis-en-scene.

Later on in groups we looked at the script called tea which I found was very odd script, we sat in our groups discussing it and to see what we could change. We came to the following solutions that there referring to the tea as being a sexual thing.

Lecture: Phil 22/10/10

Later on I had a lecture by Phil again and it was really interesting he made us get into groups and do a a task about the film "Made in Dagenham"- Regional Launch, we had to discuss in our groups in about 15 minutes how we would arrange everything and I think it was a really good exercise to test ourselves to thinking logically and to research under pressure and come out with solutions very quickly.

Lecture: Jim Shorthose 26/10/10

Yesterday I had a lecture by Jim Shorthose and I found this lecture even more confusing than the last, I do not understand how he is helping us with the essay. I try to listen to understand how he could help me benefit with my essay but I just do not understand, I feel the same with his books!

I have also started watching another Alfred Hitchcock film called TOPAZ, I have watched nearly half of it when I finish the other half hopefully tomorrow I will post my notes on here.

Phil Nodding's Lecture: Guest Lecturer on Developing Networks

Today I found this lecture very useful and interesting

Phil talked about what he has done so far in his career, he gave us some tips on how to help us get a career, he told us about some events and when there on. I found this was extremely interesting and helped me realise a lot about what is expected.

"The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock

I have to admit that I did not find this film that interesting at all, I think the whole plot is quite weak and that it seems rather strange to make a story about "The Birds".

Melanie Daniels who lives in San Francisco went to pick up a Mynan bird from a pet store.
Mitchell Brenner a criminal lawyer knows Miss Daniels does not work at the pet shop but acts as if she does and asks about a bird he s interested in buying (love birds), he then gives in and says he knew she didnt work there and that she met her in court but Miss Daniels disagrees about ever meeting him before.
After Mr Brenner left the shop, Miss Daniels wrote his license plate down and rung a friend to get some more information on him i.e where he lives and his full name.
Miss Daniels ordered two love birds for him and went to deliver them as a surprise but to her dismay he was not there and a neighbour mentioned he goes to Bodega Bay every weekend.
So Melanie drove up to Bodega Bay and stopped at a shop to ask where Mr. Brenner lives and what was his little girls name, she also asked if there was a different route she could drive as she wanted it to be a surprise, the man mentioned she could go to see Miss Annie Hayworth the school teacher and he could hire her a boat, so Melanie went to see Annie and she said her name was Cathy, she then came back and the man had hired her a boat.
Melanie sailed over to the house and ran into the house when no one was there looking and left the birds and a card as a surprise, she ran back to the boat and sailed off and hide as Mr. Brenner went into the house saw the surprise and came running out looking for whom ever did it, he spotted her and got in his car to meet Melanie at the other side of the bay.
Unfortunately as Melanie was sailing over a gull hit her on the head causing her to bleed quite a bit and feel dizzy, Mr Brenner helped her.
Mr Mitch Brenner invited her to dinner for coming to all that trouble to drop the birds off, Mitch introduced Melanie to her mother Lydia whom did not seem keen on her, at the end of the evening Mitch insulted her about her wild days and she left in a huff!
Lydia called Mr Brinkmeyers about the chickens she had bought as they won't seem to eat anything, he mentioned that Dan Fawsett's chickens wont eat either- maybe there ill.
Melanie mentions she s staying with Annie who she went to school with but she was lying as she didn't want Mitch to know she came up just for him.
Annie lets Melanie stay for the night and talks about Lydia as Annie moved to Bodega Bay for Mitch as they were an item but his father died 4 years ago and things went down from there it was too much. She mentioned that Lydia is afraid of losing her son and that he ll find love somewhere else, she does not want to be alone. Then a loud bang happens on Annie's door a seagull was dead on her porch on a full moon.
Cathy loves Melanie so much for giving her the birds and wants her to come to her surprise birthday party.
Lydia is un-keen on Melanie as she has been in her father's paper a lot about wild things and worries about Mitch and what he wants.
Mitch called Melanie later on at Annies to apologise and begging her to come to Cathy's birthday party, she attends the part and Mitch and Melanie go to the top of a hill and talk and Melanie gets upset about her mother as Mitch has a mother who really cares , saying " my mother left me when I was 11 for a hotel man", Mitch apologises and they walk back down to the party but sadly another attack happens but the seagulls attack everyone, Mitch tries to get all the children in, after checking everyone they seem fine just a few scratched and cuts.
After the party and Melanie stays for tea a sworm of birds come down the chimmy and attack Lydia, Cathy, Mitch and Melanie.
The next morning Lydia goes to see Dan Fawsett about his chickens and to drop Cathy off to her dismay Lydia finds Mr Fawsett dead with the windows all broken in his house, dead birds everywhere and his eyes had been eaten.
Later on Lydia was in such a distress, Mitch goes to see the detectives from Santa Rosa to give a statement. Lydia gets very upset when she realises Mitch has gone to Mr Fawsett and Melanie tries to help her by bringing her tea and saying she ll go pick Cathy up from school as she s worried about her.
Sparrows and Seagulls surround the school and the children have to run all the way home being attacked.
Mitch and Melanie go into a Mr Carter s cafe to call her father to let people know what is going on, a lady called Mrs Bundy says Ornithology is her avocation that that " Birds are not aggressive creatures miss, they bring beauty into the world, it is man kind rather who insists upon making it difficult for life to exist upon the planet".
A man in the cafe shouts out "ITS THE END OF THE WORLD- EZEKIEL CHAPTER 6", a woman then talks about another chapter called ISARAH chapter 5.
A man called Mr Shole and Melanie imply there is a war but Mrs Bunday says "why would birds attack now 140 million years ago they were here, why would they go against humanity now". A woman in the cafe gets stressed and says could people lower there voices as its scaring the children.
Mrs Bunday says "there are 8,650 species today, 5,750,000,000 birds live in the United States and the 5 continents contain 100 billion birds each, birds of different species do not flock together".
The birds attack again as a man is filling his car with petrol causing him to be knocked out and the petrol to leak all over the floor, a man lights a cigar and its too late for the people to say anything they did shout over but an explosion had happened in seconds.
Everyone panicked and ran off, Melanie trapped herself in a telephone box, most people managed to get back into the cafe, the woman who asked people to keep it down as its scaring the children then starts blaming Melanie saying " this all started when you got here, you're evil", Melanie slaps her and she stops.
Mitch and Melanie go to find Cathy but Annie is dead on her porch, they get Cathy from the house and go home, Mitch boards the house up as much as possible but the birds attack again and he hurts his arm.
Mitch puts the radio on and they only mentions there s been bird attacks but not that any help was coming! Mitch was so angry.
Melanie hears a fluttering noise, she does not want to wake anyone and goes up stairs, she opens a door where the roof had been eaten away and the birds attack her, Mitch and Lydia find her nearly dead and say they need to take her to a hospital
Mitch goes to Melanie s car to see if theres any news on the radio, he goes very quickly as its covered with birds.
Mitch manages to get Melanie, Lydia and Cathy in the car with the love birds and Melanie grabs Lydia tightly and looks at her like a mother and Lydia accepts.

MALac: That's a Wrap

Today myself and the team met up at my house at 9am to film, however we did not start out to a good start we did not start filming till about 11ish as we realised some parts of the equipment were missing or not working, our tripod was missing the part that allows you to move the camera around. Our chip in the camera would not work, luckily I had a 4MB chip from my camera that we managed to use, we were also missing the gun shot for the boom stick and missing the clips to put the gels up. So after going a bit back and forth we managed to start filming.

Our actor/actress were really good and enthusiastic and really did the role proud, we manages to wrapped up at about 7ish so as you can imagine it has been a long day but we re glad that at the end of it everything went well and we have a lot of footage and different angles to work with. Fingers crossed when we look at the footage on Thursday we will be really happy with the work we have done, as I feel we did a really great job and nothing more could have been done!

I will be posting some pictures of all of us working when the Alex gets a chance to load them as we used his camera.

Context 2: Work Experience Submission Essay

Today I have been working all day on my essay, I feel I have put things into perspective and I am starting to get an understanding of what is expected of me.

The networks I will be following over the next few months will be to do with the advertising industry you see on the televisions and this is where I would like to take my degree to.

As a part of my research I have made a list of the top adverts I am currently interested in, I have found out on most of them the product name, name of the company that makes the product and the name of the company that makes the advertisement. I have also emailed a a lot of the different companies applying for work experience as well as asking questions about the advertisements they have made, hopefully I will get some feedback from them by sometime this up and coming week.

Today we had to have everything prepared to start filming on Monday, we had a slight problem though our Director was missing and unfortunately we had to appoint the role to someone else that person being Alex.

We also came round to my basement today to take better pictures to put on our blogs, which I will post sometime next week.

We decided that our Genre was going to be a mix of Thriller and Mystery Drama.

The Location is going to be at my house in my basement.

We have our actors a woman from Vyte and a man from Alex, we feel we did not need the 2nd man actor.

Props: We have arranged that we already have a chair in the basement, Alex is sorting out the chains for the character's hands and little bits about the character too and Daniel is sorting out the table.

We have already booked our equipment to collect on Monday at 9.30, we plan to be filming all day and hopefully get everything done if not we will continue after lessons on tuesday.

We went through all our different 9 shots and Vyte will be drawing up a storyboard which I will then post on here.

Also Daniel is sorting out the Risk assessment forms.

Here is our new proposal/treatment as we have changed quite a few ideas to the first treatment and proposal you saw.

Malac, a short film that depicts the darkest depths of a demented heart. In a panicked state and caught in an un-compromised position, he finds himself trapped in the midst of a dark, cold room. She a psychotic and crazed woman is out for an act of revenge but for what reason? With the incandescent Malac reflecting her malicious glee stricken face, she reveals the very thing which will ultimately cause his inevitable demise.

A pan around stolen items of his, it instantly will become clear this person is a stalker. A blur as he slowly comes to and realises the situation he's in, he notices his items scattered around the room leaving the impression he's been stalked.

Jools seminar 14th and 15th October

Designing for the Screen

This seminar we talked about the 7 visual components and I was quite impressed with myself as I had read the first chapter of The Visual Story book by Bruce Block the day before so I had a heads up on what Jools was discussing, I plan to continue on with the book chapter at a time and updating my blog about what I will be learning from it, hopefully I ll be on the right track for next weeks lessons.

15th Lecture by Jim Shorthouse

Today we had a lecture from Jim Shorthouse, to be quite honest though after the hour I did not feel I learnt that much, I got to grips with some of the things he was explaining but most of it was very confusing. I did get a book from him called Soul Food, and Music which is suppose to lead on from Fish, Horses and other Animals, but apparently it won't help with the essay so I think I ll have a flick through but not read it properly as need to read the Fish, Horses and other Animals first to get more of a start on this Context 2 Essay!

Marnie by Alfred Hitchcock

I found this film very interesting, I wanted to keep watching to understand more, however I did find some parts of the film odd and confusing but everything came into place at the end.

Marnie Holland had stolen $9,967 dollars from where she worked.
She had a bunch of different identities ranging from Mary Taylor to Margaret Edgar to Martha Heilbron.
After stealing the money where she had worked, she packed 2 suitcases and placed one in a train stations locker and put the key down the drain.
She went to a new town and dyed her hair from black to blonde.
Marnie applied for a new job at Rutland & Co, a man called Mark recognises her from her last job, but decides to give her a test run at the job.
Marnie in her spare time loves to ride her black horse called Foreyo.
Mark the owner of Rutland & Co discovered that Marnie had stolen Lisa's key and stole money out of the safe.
However Mark ends up taking her for a meal, he says you have two choices either I can turn you into the police or you marry me.
Marnie marries Mark even though she did not want to, she hates to be handled by any men.
Marnie has these nightmares about her muma being hurt and seeing the colour red.
Mark and Marnie have a house party, however the Strutts were invited who Marnie had previously stolen from, he admits he recognises her but she keep saying no you don't as she was worried that she would go to jail.
Mark confronts Marie about how many times she's stolen, she admits she has done 5 jobs in the last 5 years stealing over $50,000 dollars from 5 different towns ranging from Buffalo, Detroit, New Jersey, New York, Elizabeth.
Mark explains to Marnie she has 2 options, coming clean and possibly not getting a jail sentence or Mark offers to pay everything she has stolen however there might be a possibly jail sentence.
Marnie goes on a horse hunt with Mark's family (sister, father & friends) and sees the colour red and rides off jumping over fences however her horse gets stuck on a wall and she shoots Foreyo as he's in pain. She takes the same gun to Mark's work place and tries to steal from him again, however Mark finds her.
Mark decides to take her to her mothers to get some answers on why Marnie is so sick, to remind her of what happened that night thats haunted her all these years not knowing what really happened.
Marnie's mother insists to not remind her as she thought it was a message from the God's that her memory that night disappeared.
Marnie begins to remember that a sailor was round with her mother and starting kissing Marnie as she was afraid of the lighting. Her mother starts hitting him trying to get him off of Marnie and Marnie tries to help her mother but accidentally ends up killing the sailor. When it came to the police Marnie's mother took the blame to protect her daughter.

The Visual Story: Seeing the Structure of Film, TV and New Media by Bruce Block

Bruce wanted to "make visual structure easy to use and bring the class and visual theory into the present, make it practical, and link it with story structure".

Chapter 1- The Visual Components

"The basic visual components are space, line, shape, tone, colour, movement and rhythm", all of these are found in every picture we see.

" Actors, locations, props, costumes, and scenery are made up of visual components".

"A visual component communicates moods, emotions, ideas, and, most importantly, gives visual structure to what we're watching".

SPACE: The space in front of the camera whilst shooting, the difference between the actual space we shot and the same space as it shows on a screen and also the characteristics of the screen where we view our pictures.

LINE: Line is non- existent, it is a perceptual fact, it only exists in our minds, line is the evidence of other visual components that allow us to perceive lines, however they are not real.

SHAPE: Shapes go hand in hand as all shapes appear to be constructed from lines, the shape of an object appears when we lower the object to a silhouette.

TONE: which is black and white and the grey scale, tone is dealt with visually when working in black and white, however we have to consider tone when we use colour also as tone is a component of colour.

COLOUR: "One of the most powerful visual components is also the most misunderstood".

MOVEMENT: Although many great films have been made without real movement(i.e using still pictures), we usually rely on movement as a key part in pictures. As we know movement is the component that attracts an audience's eye, it plays a huge role in visual structure.

RHYTHM: There is not only rhythm we can hear but also we can see, you can find rhythm in nonmoving objects and moving objects, rhythm is also used in editing.

'The purpose of this book is to enable you to understand and use visual structure so that you can make better pictures".

THE SCREEN: Refers to the 2-dimensional screens we watch pictures, which include television, computer screens, movie screens, the proscenium of a theatre stage, canvases in museums, pictures in books, magazines, all of these I have mentioned flat, 2-dimensional surfaces are screens.

REAL WORLD/ SCREEN WORLD: "The real world is the environment we live in" which is the 3-dimensional world we inhabit. "The Screen world is created by images on screen". They both sometimes follow the same visual rules.

FOREGROUND, MIDGROUND, AND BACKGROUND: FG- objects close to the camera/viewer, MG- objects that are further away from the camera/viewer and BG- objects that are the farthest away from the camera/ viewer.

VISUAL PROGRESSION: Progression starts as one thing and changes to something else, so its like something getting more complex, like it growing, for example, " A story can have a progression as a character learns and grows".

THE PICTURE PLANE: When anything is discussed in the screen world, there will always be a frame lines surround it to create a "picture plane".

" The picture plane is the "window" within which the picture will exist", "every screen is a picture plane", whether is be a computer screen or a motion picture. The frame lines show height and width of the window or screen, of course the proportions of different screens depend on what type of screen your using.

The picture plane of a television is the edges of a screen, even when you put your hands together up in front of your eye to frame something is a picture plane.

Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock

I found this film quite intriguing and to be honest a bit cringey and sick, it was very interesting but made me feel very cautious. I made a few notes on the film and here they are:

A lady called Marion Crane has decided to run away with $40,000 dollars, which she was suppose to put in the bank for her boss, whom s company is retail, Marion had been working for this man for over 10 years so there was no reason to not trust her.
Marion decided to exchange her car, as she got pulled over when driving to have a nap and a police man came and checked if she was ok, giving her the impression she was being followed.
Marion stops at Bates Motel- cabin 1 out of 12 to have a nights rest, Norman Bates the son's owner welcomes her and offers to have dinner together. However Norman's mother argues about bringing a stranger dinner but he does so anyway. They eat in the parler where the room is surrounded by stuffed birds.
Norman explains that his hobby is to stuff creatures but mainly birds as they are "passive to begin with", he explains that its a cheap hobby you just need needles, thread, saw dust and the chemicals are the only pricey part, however he says a hobby is meant to pass time not fill it.
Marion asks about what else he does, does he have friends or go out, he explains his mother is sick and he looks after her and that a "boy's best friend is his mother".
Norman starts to ramble on about "everyone is in private traps, which clamps them in, no one can get out", he mentions he was born in a trap so he doesn't mind but he does?
Norman's dad died a while ago and his mother had a lover, which made him feel replaced, he says, "a son is a poor substitute for a lover", Norman was raised by his mother alone, but her new lover influenced her to build the cabins, however he sadly died also.
After Norman settled Marion in she goes for a shower, Norman spies through a peep hole to see what she is doing.
Marion was attacked by a woman and stabbed repeatedly causing her death. Norman finds her and cleans the bathroom and wraps here in the broken shower curtain and puts her in her car boot and puts her belongings with her and drives the car into a lake.
Marion's sister Lyla who was away for the weekend goes to see Sam, whom is Marion's boyfriend, to ask where she was and that she can help her get out of the mess she's in with stealing $40,000 dollars. A private investigator walks in asking questions about Marion who has been missing for a couple of days. Arbagas the investigator goes to the Bates Motel to see what 's going on and he wanted to talk to Norman's mother but Norman insisted that she was too ill to talk. Sadly he gets attacked and stabbed repeatedly by a woman and dies, leaving Sam and Lyla waiting for his call on some news about Marion.
Sam and Lyla go to see the deputy Sheriff of the town in Alchambers, the deputy Sheriff's wife explains that Norman's mother has been dead for 10 years, she helped Norman pick out the dress she was buried in, she was buried with her lover. However she apparently poisoned him for being married and they were both found dead in bed together.
Norman knows that now Marion is dead causing the Investigator to come and now he's dead someone else will come looking, so he convinces his mother to hide in the fruit cellar.
Sam and Lyla go to bates Motel pretending to be married couple to get some answers, Sam distracts Bates as Lyla goes to look around the house as they only found a piece of torn up paper with the figures $40,000 dollars on so they know Marion was there.
Norman knocks Sam out as he realises where is Lyla who sam said was taking a nap doesn't believe him. Lyla finds an old woman in the fruit cellar however it is the skeleton of Norman's mother and that a woman who comes in to kill Lyla is Norman dressed as his mother! Sam stops him and they are both safe, Norman is taken in by the police and questioned.
They come to the conclusion that Norman's brain is half him and half his mother, that Norman killed his mother and poisoned her lover and that he was dangerously disturbed since his father died. His mother was clingy and because the lover replaced him so he felt, he killed them, it pushed him over board, he stole her corpse and the real coffin has no body it in, he has 2 personalities, he wanted her there with him.
The man at the police department explains that if Norman had a strong attraction for a woman like he did with Marion, the mother side of him would go wild, it would make the mother side want to kill her.
There's an illusion of his mother being alive, hence him dressing like her and using her voice, but now he believes the battle is over and the dominant personality won.
The last thing you hear from Norman's mind is his mother saying, " I'll show them what I am".
Which makes me think is the mother letting her son take the blame for everything!?

Today I met up with my group and we discussed our roles, our proposal and our treatment.

Here are a few notes we made:

We decided that the following people took these roles:

We decided to possibly have 2 different cameras but with 3 people helping out to get a variety of angles and possibilities.

We decided on 3 different locations that all have basements, one is my house, another is Sonny's friends house and the last is Alex's old house. I went down into my basement and took some pictures to give us an idea of if it would work or not and I think it could be really good for what we want to do.

Proposal

When a demoralised, disorientated man finds himself in a hostage situation, a world of confusion begins; his where abouts is unknown as he struggles to remember how he got there. A twisted woman holds the key to his future, is he innocent?

Treatment 1

He is tied up to a chair, the room is dark and the air is moist, there is hardly any light you cannot see much. He is sweating a bit. A silhouette of a woman walks in; all you hear are her foot steps. The man face looks rugged and confused of where and why he is here. She says in a calm and polite term “are you sure you wouldn’t like a drink”, the camera focuses on her face as she smiles and she says “it’s never too late to change your mind”. Focus’s on his face, he looks frightened and he says “I swear. I swear. please. Stop, Please? The woman brings a case in front of her; the shot is of her doing this, she says “sush. be quiet. quiet, It will no longer be necessary to lie. He says “I swear…”. She says whist opening the case “shush, shush, I have here a MALac. God it’s beautiful. He says “Don’t. Don’t. I swear. She says in a pleased voice “Malacs. Now no more shall we part on this path of truth we find ourselves on. Opening the case, its glowing sheen plays on her face. She says “pain, enlighting truth. This is what MALac brings. Shall we continue? She removes the MALac and shutting the case steps forward towards the man, the man turns his head away from the MALac. Man steps out of the shadows and forces he’s head towards the MALac. He screams.

Family Plot by Alfred Hitchcock

I hired this film from the library to have a look at some Alfred Hitchock films. I found this film as an overall very interesting and I would say its a definitely a must watch. I made some notes when watching it and here s what I got:

This old lady saw a psychic called Blanch Tyler to talk about her dead sister, she wants her dead sisters help to find her son she made her give up 40 years ago.
This old lady is willing to pay Blanch $10,000 dollars to try find the boy and reunite him to his real family.
George whom is Blanch's boyfriend pretends to be from a law firm to get information out of blanch's clients so that she can pretend to be a psychic. George however actually is a cab driver who works for central cab.
Trader- is a woman in a blonde wig but is actually brunette, whom does not talk at all when trading for diamonds, after one trading she went in a helicopter and was dropped in a golf course.
Three people died in 1950 in a fire on the same day all being from the same family called Shoebridge, however 2 have one headstone which is quite old and the other 1 called Edward Shoebridge had a new headstone which doesn't make sense for all the people who died on the same day.
As the film goes on I find out that Edward's headstone was made in 1965 but he died in 1950, George goes to find if he has a death certificate but it was declined, which makes us aware that he faked him own death.
Edward Shoebridge actually turns out to be Arthur Adams and Joseph (Malony) is his wing man who trapped his parents in the house and made it go up in flames, which is how he faked him own death.
Arthur Adams and his wife are Jewellery theifs and there is a big random for them, they are very clever, they kidnap people and keep them in a secret place in their house, one person they take is BIshop Wood who actually baptised Arthur as a baby, they take there victims by using an injection from the dentist Arthur goes to.
Arthur Adams thinks George and Blanch are after him as he thinks they know he s a jewellery thief but actually Blanch wants to tell him this old lady wants to find her nephew to give him all her inheritance. So Arthur sends Malony his wing man to try and kill them however he ends up dying himself.
Arthur's wife comes into their jewellery shop to tell him about there next trade but makes it look out like she buying something and she get's very distressed when Arthur says share and share alike? this bit confuses me as I get the impression Arthur's wife does not want to trade anymore but Arthur does!
At the end Blanch goes to find this Arthur and is kidnapped in Arthur's house and George manages to find her, Blanch pretends to be unconscious and they manage to trap Arthur and his wife in there secret room. Then Blanch manages to find one of the diamonds by being an actual psychic, george rings the police and Blanch winks! this part confuses me on is she actually a psychic, as the whole film she pretends to be as George gets the information from people so it looks like she is an actual psychic, then at the end she manages to find a diamond with no help!

Rundance

Today I met up with the Rundance group where they were celebrating world metal health day, where they are performing from 10am-10pm on today being the 10/10/10.

However I did not manage to stay for the whole event, I met them at 10am at the Bandstand arboretum, then I went at 11am to the Top of the shops, Contemporary and then at 11.30 to the Leaf stem, St Peter's Church. They still have 7 more locations to go! Good Luck to them!

This was a very weird, interesting experience, it was a great experience watching what the Rundance group were trying to do, quite a few people joined in and it was quite good fun! As a result i've been invited to a fashion show this month to go and take some footage again. It was also a great opportunity to practice using the panasonic camera and tripod.

Generating Ideas

In this lecture we discussed When is enough enough?

Capturing- For me is to think about it in my head for a moment and to write it down, maybe though I should try to draw my idea instead.
Challenging- Giving ourselves tough problem to solve- CHALLENGE YOURSELF!
Broadening- The more diverse your knowledge- BOOST YOUR CREATIVITY!
Surrounding- physical/social environments, more interesting and diverse the things and the people around you, the more interesting your own ideas become.
Stages- Concept- Basic outline of story
Treatment/ Proposal
Screenplay/ Shooting Script
Concept Task- write down the outline for a recent film that you've seen: The last film I saw was The Invention of Lying (Ricky Gervais) " A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain".
Treatment- Scene by scene in present tense of how films unfold, basic actions and plot structures, generally equates to a paragraph for each major dramatic event, not fully developed scenes with dialogue, precise settings or actions, short film treatment might by 2/3 pages long.
Dramatic event= narrative beat- moves the story on.
Proposal- is your opportunity to convince a 3rd party that your film is worth making.
What a proposal should do: Be Clear, Clarify, Convince, Organised, Professional, Imaginative.
Start with an overview paragraph.
EPG- electronic programme.
Next few paragraphs- outline how you expect your story to unfold.
Brief summary- a bit about you, reasons for doing your story.
Screenplay- written as it unfolds to an audience.
Screenplay Elements- 6- Title, Scene headings, Stage directions, Dialogue, Character cues, Personal Direction.

I have also subscribed to Jurgen Wolff, Creative Brainstorming e Letter, June 2008, hopefully this will be helpful.

I took out the Voice and Vision book by George Racz, which I will be looking at over the weekend.

I took out The Film Director's Intuition: Script analysis and rehearsal Techniques by Judith Weston, which I will be looking at over the weekend.

I have also taken out 3 films from the library by Alfred Hitchcock called Psycho, "Marnie" and Family Plot, which I hope to watch in the next week and write about them on here and then get some different ones out as there's about 15 dvds.

I have read through the 3 scripts called Tea, Feel and Train.

Tea: This script I found was very peculiar, I get the understanding that it is about a couple having a disagreement and the woman would not try something different out that the man wanted her to.

Feel: This script I found very hard to understand, it seems to showing a champion who only has till the end of the week to live

Train: I also found this script even harder to get a grip of, to me it sounds like a woman has this man wrapped around her finger and he will do anything and everything for her.

Deborah's Seminar 8th October

In this seminar we were kept in the same groups as before and were given a script called MALac, we sat down as a group and did a brainstorm and this is as far as we got. We came to the conclusion of wanting to film in a basement/cellar, that there are 3 characters- 1 woman and 2 men. We want to show that the woman is a psychotic house-wife who wants revenge, who has lost the plot and been empowered. With the man we want to show one of them looking rough, clothes are ripped, the other man we haven't really discussed. With the MALac being the object we think the woman is proud of it but we haven't discussed what it would be. We are meeting up as a group on monday to discuss more and to sort out the location and characters.

Run-dance Scheme 10th October 2010

Deborah mentioned about this scheme that is being held in Nottingham town on Sunday, apparently it has been happening in many cities and I think it would be a great opportunity to go with a team and hire a camera and take some footage. I will post something on sunday to let everyone know how it went and what it was like.
